Port Jefferson Station, December 2008During the 1990’s, a number of international death care corporations acquired funeral homes and cemeteries throughout the US, Canada, Europe and Australia. The largest of which, Service Corp. International (SCI), has owned and operated several funeral businesses in and around Port Jefferson Station, including Casimir Funeral Home located at 523 Route 112 in Port Jefferson Station.
Following extensive negotiations, Casmir Funeral Home has closed it doors to the public. While this may seem unfortunate, Moloney Family Funeral Homes was able to purchase this historic building from a local real estate developer. After an extensive renovation plan, Moloney Family Funeral Homes plans to open to the public by the end of February. The acquisition was completed by the end of December.
The Moloney Family has been serving Long Island families since the firm was originally founded in Central Islip nearly 80 years ago. In 1962, F. Daniel Moloney (1937 -2001) founded the Moloney Family Funeral Homes in Lake Ronkonkoma. The family business has grown by adhering to the founder’s philosophy, “there is no higher reward than the trust of the people you serve.”
According to Peter Moloney, Partner and Funeral Director, “We believe this will prove to be a significant event for the Port Jefferson Station Community. Long Island Family’s are very traditional, particularly in the choices we make in regard to funeral services for family members. It never seemed right to us that this well recognized local landmark should be owned by a corporation out of Texas. Corporate executives simply cannot understand the funeral and memorial traditions of families of Long Island. Their family members don’t live here ours do.”
Service Corp. International is a New York Stock Exchange listed corporation with funeral homes and cemeteries throughout the US, Canada, and Europe. “While SCI continues to operate O.B. Davis Funeral Home in Centereach, Port Jefferson Station, and Miller Place, as of today, SCI no longer owns all the funeral homes in Port Jefferson Station. Now the people have a choice which will inevitably improve customer service.” Says Moloney.
According to F. Daniel Moloney Jr., Partner and Funeral Director, “each community has its own customs. It is difficult for the home office of a large corporation with over 3000 funeral homes worldwide to appreciate the local traditions of a particular community. Funerals are extremely personal; we take great pride in serving each family individually.”
Casimir Funeral Home is presently closed and will remain closed with a planned re-opening by the end of February as Moloney’s Port Jefferson Station Funeral Home. The new business will offer funeral arrangements, cremation and memorial services, traditional cemetery interment services, caskets, burial vaults, and several licensed advance funeral planning counselors to assist families to convert their pre-arrangements to Moloney’s new facility.
One of the top priorities of Moloney Funeral Homes is to keep funeral services within the budgets of all families. “There are several important issues to consider when selecting a funeral home. Certainly, service and facilities are important. But price is also important. We are confident we will meet the expectations of the Port Jefferson families in service and have set our price point so that we will be able to assist any family in creating a meaningful ceremony for their loved one. Says Michael Moloney, Partner and Funeral Director.
“Funeral Planning is a very good idea that all families should consider. Over the years many families have pre-arranged at Casimir Funeral Home; however these pre-arrangements were made with SCI, and were not included with the purchase of the building. Consumers with pre-arrangements with SCI may transfer their pre-arrangements to a Moloney Family Funeral Home.
