Alfred G Smith, 97, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 24, 2026. After 48 years of marriage, he was predeceased by his beloved wife, Sheila Smith (Walther), who passed away in 2017. Together they built a life grounded in love, family, adventure and sharing decades of memories. Known simply as Al, to the many who respected and admired him, he was the proud father of 11 children, a cherished grandfather to 27 grandchildren, and a blessed great-grandfather to 23 great-grandchildren. His family was one of his greatest accomplishments.
Al dedicated much of his life to public service. He was a member of the Ronkonkoma Fire Department, obtaining the rank of Chief and continued on as a life member for 68 years. He retired as a Lieutenant with the Suffolk County Sheriff's Department, in 1991.
A proud member of the United States Navy, as part of the Greatest Generation (World War II), he witnessed profound change in the world throughout his lifetime—both good and bad—and carried those experiences with perspective and wisdom. His life was marked by remarkable adventures. In his younger years, he rode bulls and traveled with a rodeo, embracing the thrill and grit of that demanding sport. He and Sheila later shared their greatest adventures traveling throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico, creating memories that would last a lifetime.
Whether serving his country, protecting his community, or sharing tales of his many experiences, Al lived fully and courageously. He will be remembered as a storyteller, dedicated to his community and a loving father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
