Barbara A. Napoli

d. May 18, 2025

Beloved mother, adoring “Gaga” treasured friend, and dedicated nurse

Barbara Ann Napoli was born on March 6, 1942, in Queens, New York, the daughter of Gertrude and Stephen Bendas. From the moment she read the book “Woman Will Be Doctors” at the age of 13, she knew she was meant to care for others. At the age of 20, Barbara graduated from Queens Hospital Center School of Nursing, launching a career that would span more than five decades of nursing. Never one to rest on her laurels, she later earned a master’s degree and became a Nurse Practitioner, touching countless lives with her skill, candor, and compassion.

Barbara’s commitment to service was matched only by her zest for life. She cultivated friendships wherever she went and kept them blooming—much like the gardens she tended despite an aching back and the gentle protests of her children. She criss‑crossed the globe with a loyal circle of travel companions, collecting memories and recipes in equal measure. A fearless cook and baker, she delighted family and friends with dishes as colorful as her wardrobe—and, occasionally, her language.

Barbara is survived by her three children and their spouses, Denise Matters (William); Robert Napoli (Elizabeth); and Stephen Napoli (Darby)

To her six grandchildren, she was Gaga—unpredictable, and utterly unforgettable. She was known for showing up in outfits that turned heads and started conversations. But beneath the silliness was a woman with strong convictions. Gaga used every opportunity to teach them to speak up, stand tall, and never let anyone tell them who they were or what they could be. She cheered them on fiercely, preached justice passionately, and sprinkled a little chaos and a lot of love into everything she did. Her spirit lives on in Brittany, Grace, Madison, Kayla, Julia, and Kadin.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Gertrude and Stephen Bendas, and her sister, Gail Swartz.

A celebration of Barbara’s life will be held at Moloney-Sinnicksons Moriches Funeral Home on Saturday, May 31, 2025, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

In honor of Barbara’s vibrant spirit and colorful style, the family invites those attending the celebration of her life to wear their brightest colors. For those who feel more comfortable in traditional attire, please come as you are — all are welcome.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to East End Hospice (SEE LINK BELOW), continuing Barbara’s lifelong mission of caring for others.

Barbara lived her life with open arms, a quick wit, and a heart as generous as her legendary cookie platters. We will carry her lessons—and her recipes—with us always.
