Carmelita “Lola” Matta
It is with great sadness and deep love that we announce the passing of our beloved Carmelita “Lola,” at the age of 98.
Born on January 10, 1928, in Brooklyn, NY, Lola lived a life full of love, family, friends and countless memories. She was a woman of strength, grace, kindness and wisdom, whose presence brought comfort and joy to all who knew her.
Family was everything to Lola. Growing up in Brooklyn, with her five sisters and brother, she learned how important family is from Nana and Papa. She found love early with her husband of 68 years, Bernardino “Grandfather.” She took immense pride in her four daughters, seven grandchildren, and four great grandchildren and her love for them was unconditional.
After leaving Brooklyn for Long Island, she worked at the IRS where she became a supervisor before retiring. In her free time, she loved crafting, sewing her many dolls, especially her Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls that she made for anyone who was having a new baby. She was an amazing cook and kept all her visitors well fed. Lola and Grandfather also loved ballroom dancing.
Throughout her 98 years, Lola experienced many changes and milestones, always meeting life with courage and resilience. Lola is survived by her daughters Barbara and Jo Anne, son-in laws Darrin and Nick, her grandchildren, Tom, Sue, Ryan, Matthew, Michelle, Shannon and Tyler and her great grandchildren Andrew, Zoe, Vincent, and Kylian. She is preceded in death, by her husband and daughters Bernadette (Ralph) and Denise
A life so long and lovingly lived leaves behind an immeasurable legacy. Though she is no longer with us, her memory will forever be a blessing.
