In Loving Memory of Our Beloved Catherine (Katie) Mary McDermott

Catherine (Katie) Mary McDermott, 82 years old, a resident of Lake Grove, NY, passed away peacefully at her home on October 27, 2026 surrounded by her family with immense amounts of love.
Born in Baltimore, Maryland on June 15, 1944, she was the daughter of the late Jack and Margaret Hines. After high school Katie attended St John’s Queens Hospital Nursing School where she was student council president and valedictorian of her graduation class of 1963. Shortly after graduation she met her one and only love of her life, John McDermott. They married in 1965 and lived a beautiful life together filled with her 4 children, a large extended family and wonderful friends.
Katie had the most infectious smile and laugh. Her laughter had a beautiful way of filling every empty space of any room she walked into. Her eyes held a depth of expression that could speak without words, revealing the beautiful, empathetic, strong heart she carried within her. She cried when she was happy, she cried when she was sad, and she never held back the emotions that made her so wonderfully human. Her heart was always open, and her love was felt by everyone fortunate enough to know her.
Katie’s greatest qualities were her faith in God and her selfless care and love for others, whether it be her patients, family, friends or a person she just met. She went the extra mile for everyone, drawing strength from God and using the power of prayer as her means to heal and touch others. Her greatest joys were found in the love she shared with her husband, John, her siblings, her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She found something to love in almost everything. She loved to dance, you'd be lucky to get your hand grabbed and pulled into a full swing dancing session in the living room. She loved to play the piano, every time she sat down in front of sheet music the notes would flow effortlessly from her fingertips. She loved to cook her beef stew and yell at John for eating too many sweets. The love shared between her and John was admirable and set a beautiful example of what true love is.
Although Alzheimer’s disease gradually changed parts of her, it could never diminish who she was or the impact she had on the people around her. The woman we knew and loved, with her beautiful laughter, expressive eyes, tender heart, and boundless capacity to care, will forever remain a part of us.
We will miss her laughter filling the room, the emotions she wore so openly, the warmth of her presence, and the love that made our family what it is. We will carry her with us in our memories, in our faith, and in the generations of family who will continue to share her love. She was deeply loved, she will be profoundly missed, and her memory will live on in every heart she touched.
Catherine (Katie) is survived by her daughter Kathleen Murray and her husband Edward Saunders, her daughter Laura Benedetto and her husband Guy Benedetto, her son John McDermott, her daughter Mary Dello-Iacono and her fiancé Jason Fiermonte, her brothers John, James and Patrick Hines and her sister Peggy Deo. She was the proud grandmother of 11 grandchildren, James Bouker, Katie Murray, Sean Bouker, Daithi Murray, Shannon O’Connor, Kiera Murray, Annie Murray, Siobhan Murray, Kaylee Dello-Iacono, Grace Benedetto, and James Dello-Iacono. Her grandchildren’s spouses, Kayla Bouker & Kylele O’Connor .
She was also a loving great grandmother of 5; Magnolia ,McKenna, Wilbert, Harlow, and Sadie, and her beloved puggle, Molly.
Also included with the family is my mother’s amazing caregiver & friend Lydia Asante. Lydia loved Katie with all her heart and provided her with the most amazing care, friendship and affection & laugher during her later years with Alzheimer’s.
Until we meet again. We will carry your love with us always. Save us all a dance in Heaven❤️
