Charles Baack was born on July 29, 1916 on Coates Ave., Holbrook, NY to Florence Reinhart and Henry Baack. His brother, Henry, was born in 1918. His father, Henry, died of the flu epidemic of 1918. Charles graduated from Sayville High School in 1934 (oldest living Sayville graduate). Charles worked as a flooring installer for Willis Flooring Co., in Patchogue. He married Anne Curley in 1942. He enlisted in the United States Navy in April 1943 and spent 21 years on P.S.T. 1085 landing U.S. troops in the South Pacific. Charles had 1 son, Kevin, born in May 1943. Charles was discharged November 1945 as a motor machinists mate 1st class.
Charles purchased Willis Flooring in the early 1950’s and operated the business for 25 years. In the late 1940’s he purchased the family home on Broadway Avenue. He always loved the sea and was a 41 year member of the Coast Guard auxiliary, working in the communication room as a ham radio operator. He did patrols on the Great South Bay, courtesy inspections. He also interviewed candidates for appointment to the Coast Guard Academy, oldest living auxiliarist. He was a six year (1965-1971) member of Sachem School Board and was a long time member and officer of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Holbrook and Holy Trinity Lutheran in Middle Island.
Charles lived alone with the support of neighbors and family until Christmas 2015. He was predeceased by parents, brother Henry, wife Anne in 2000. They were married 58 years. He is survived by son Kevin and daughter-in-law Jennifer of Readfield, ME, grandson Jason and granddaughter-in-law Vicki of Santan Valley, AZ, granddaughter Suzanne “Peach” and grandson-in-law Charles Dyke of Winthrop, ME and special great-grandchildren Corey and Erin Dyke, niece Boni Cafaro of Dover, Fl and his very special and adopted friends and families of the Twin Bark cul-de-sac, especially Elaine Alexander and Alison Mahoney.
Special thank yous to his physicians and friends, Dr. Rosenfeld, Dr. Varma and Dr. Kim. Also to the caring staff of the Arbors Bohemia and Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Hospice Unit.
Reposing Moloney’s Holbrook Funeral Home, 825 Main St., Holbrook, NY , where a religious service will be held Thursday 8pm. Funeral Service Friday 10am St. John’s Lutheran Church, Holbrook, NY. Interment Calverton National Cemetery, Calverton, NY. Visiting Thursday 2-4 & 7-9 pm. In lieu of flowers donations appreciated to St. John’s Lutheran Church, 1675 Coates Ave., Holbrook, NY 11741 or Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 36, Middle Island, NY 11953.
