Douglas E. Buckminster, age 65, passed away peacefully in his sleep at home in New York on Tuesday, June 23, 2026. He was born in Watertown MA on August 10, 1960.
A proud and devoted husband and father, Doug’s family was always his first priority and greatest joy. Together, he and his beloved wife Dianne raised two compassionate and brilliant children whose lives and work will continue his legacy. He was in awe of their eldest child Ellis for their intellect and strong moral compass, and always loved reading their mathematics papers even though the technical details eluded him. He marveled at their youngest daughter Sofie’s writing, not only for its craft but also its humanity, and her ability to deeply connect with those she came into contact with.
Doug had a distinguished career at American Express, beginning in 1985 when he joined the company as a Graduate Summer Intern and lasting nearly four decades. Over the course of his tenure, he assumed a continuously expanding remit across functions and geographies, and consistently proved his unmatched commercial and leadership acumen. Doug retired in March, 2026 as Vice Chairman, having made an outsized impact on the company and leaving behind an enduring legacy. Doug was a leader of unwavering integrity who led by example. He cared deeply about the people he worked with. He invested in them in a very real and authentic way — with his time, his candor, and his strong belief in what they could achieve. With deep commitment and care, he helped develop many of the company's most accomplished senior leaders. His insatiable curiosity and unrivaled ability to connect the dots brought out the best in others and challenged everyone around him to be better. At his retirement celebration, the comment heard most often was: "Thank you—you believed in me before I believed in myself." Few statements better capture Doug's remarkable ability to inspire, mentor, and elevate others.
Doug was a true sports fanatic. He remained wholly devoted to his teams: the Red Sox, the Patriots, the Celtics, the Bruins, and Arsenal FC, and enjoyed being challenged by friends in sports trivia. He loved watching his children become fans of their own teams, and couldn’t help but root for the Phillies and Duke basketball himself.
Most importantly, his legacy lives on in the family he loved so deeply. He is survived by his wife Dianne Buckminster, née Hemmelgarn, and their children Ellis Buckminster and Sofie Buckminster, who were the light of his life. His brother Scott Buckminster and wife Cherie survive in Johns Island SC. Doug’s mother-in-law Sharon Hemmelgarn, survives in Minster OH, as well as in laws: Don & Nancy Hemmelgarn of Loveland OH, Bruce & Jen Hemmelgarn of Milford OH, Bob & Lisa Hemmelgarn of Mason OH, Ron & Leanne Keller of Minster OH, and many nieces and nephews. Doug is pre-deceased by his parents Bruce & Marcia Buckminster, brother Mark Buckminster, and father-in-law Donald Hemmelgarn.
Doug felt passionately about education. He served on the board of the Harlem Children’s Zone in New York City and was looking forward to continuing this important work in South Carolina. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Meeting Street Scholarship Fund. Moloney’s Funeral Home, Hauppauge NY has been entrusted with the arrangements. The family is planning a Celebration of Life to be held in the fall.
