Ernest “Ernie” W. KraussJanuary 14, 1929 – May 11, 2026

Ernest “Ernie” W. Krauss, 97, passed away peacefully on May 11, 2026.

Born in Bad Mergentheim, Germany, Ernie completed his electrical apprenticeship before coming to New York in 1951. He served proudly in the United States Army from 1952 to 1954 and married his loving wife, Ruth Roeder, in May 1953.

In 1957, Ernie moved to Smithtown, New York, where he built his life and raised his family. He and Ruth welcomed their son, Ernest “Ernie” L. Krauss, on September 5, 1958. He lived in Smithtown until 2016, when he moved to Peconic Landing in Greenport, New York, where he spent his final years.

Ernie began his career with Local 25 in the mid-1950s, was sworn into the union in 1961, and dedicated 29 years to his trade as a skilled and hardworking electrician.

He was also an accomplished sailor. After purchasing his first sailboat, he became a longtime member of the Smithtown Bay Yacht Club, where he remained active for 45 years. He served as Commodore from 1972 to 1974 and proudly participated in six Around Long Island regattas, which remained a highlight of his time on the water.

Above all, Ernie was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He will be remembered for his strong values, steady presence, and kindness.

He is survived by his son, Ernest “Ernie” L. Krauss (Lois), and his granddaughter, Rebecca Krauss, as well as his brother, Dieter Krauss.

He is now reunited with his beloved wife, Ruth.

He will be deeply missed and forever remembered. An electrician to the very end, he’s now keeping heaven’s lights shining bright.
