Florence Leyden
September 6, 1932 – June 18, 2025
It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend, Florence Leyden, on June 18, 2025, at the age of 92.
Born with a lively spirit on September 6, 1932, Flo was a vibrant soul who brought joy, laughter, and unforgettable energy to everyone she met. As a devoted mom of five, grandmother to ten, and great-grandmother to twelve, she was a steady source of love, guidance, and strength.
A fighter at heart, Flo stood proudly for what she believed in — whether championing racial equality, women’s rights, or fiercely supporting her LGBTQ+ grandchildren. Her resilience and tenacity shaped a family rooted in love, humor, and fierce loyalty.
Flo was the thread that held our family tightly woven. Her warmth, charisma, and infectious humor were the heart of every gathering. She showed us the true meaning of family, and the importance of speaking your truth and cherishing each moment.
Flo lived a full and vibrant life. After relocating from Queens to Ronkonkoma with her beloved husband, James, she found joy in her community — calling weekly bingo games, holding her own at the card table, and never turning down a chance to travel or gamble (she always had a little sparkle in her eye when she talked about Vegas). She loved horror movies, old Westerns, Betty Boop, and music, especially Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin. She proudly embraced her heritage and kept our stomachs — and souls — full of her unforgettable cooking. No Thanksgiving was complete without her legendary stuffing (made with four — yes, four — sticks of butter) or the mouthwatering aroma of her homemade pierogies filling the house.
Though she is no longer with us in body, her spirit will live on in our hearts and memories — always. Thank you, Flo, for your strength, your unconditional love, the fun and laughter, and the pierogies.
We love you forever.
