Harnek Kaur (1931-2025)Harnek Kaur, 94, passed away peacefully in New York on 6/2/25. She is survived by children Gurpreet, and Amie; grandchildren Sidak, Praynka and Simar; great-grandchildren Gursanj, Hazoor and Jeeva.
Harnek was born in Roorkee, UP India in 1931 to Daulat Singh and Bishan Kaur, the second youngest among six children. Harnek was fiercely independent, excelling in academics and working as a school teacher before marrying Jarnail Singh in April 1957. She was known by all of her students as “choti bhenji”, teaching Maths to Primary School students at Handiaya Government School.
Harnek and Jarnail started a family in Handiaya and raised two children, Gurpreet and Amerdeep. They then settled in Model Town Ludhiana, before traveling with their children to help raise grandchildren. First living in California with Amie, Manjit and Praynka, then moving to Sydney with Gurpreeet, Sukhjeet, Sidak and Simar.
Though she loved jigsaw puzzles, sudoku, and praying for her loved ones, Beeji’s favorite role was that as a grandparent. She treasured her time with her grandkids and loved being their Beeji / Bma. She was your biggest supporter and never failed to pray for the well being of all of her children; whether related or not.
Beeji will always be remembered for her strength, strong will, and unrelenting support. A mother, who made everyone her children. We couldn’t have asked for a better guardian angel, and will miss her every day. Beeji’s memory will live on in the hearts of all those who loved her.
