James “Jim” Commander, born on August 5, 1939, in Queens, New York, passed away peacefully in his sleep on May 22, 2026.
Jim was the beloved son of George and Margaret Commander, and one of six children in a lively, close‑knit family.
He has predeceased his devoted wife, Dawn, with whom he shared 47 years of love, partnership, and laughter, and by his six wonderful children. Jim and Dawn’s story began at the Pub Car in Port Jefferson, Long Island, where Dawn’s mother introduced them—an introduction that blossomed into a lifetime of companionship.
Jim worked hard from an early age, beginning at the local hardware store, where he developed a deep knowledge of tools and collected countless humorous stories from the customers he served.
A proud Army veteran, Jim served from 1957 to 1959. After completing his military service, he pursued further education and went on to serve 26 dedicated years with the Nassau County Police Department, a role he carried out with integrity and commitment.
Jim embraced life with enthusiasm. He loved his long early morning walks, peaceful moments at Lake Ronkonkoma with his “Lakie” friends, days spent at the beach, and reading American history books. He enjoyed travelling, visiting casinos, and was an avid “craps” player.
Above all, Jim found happiness in the everyday—living each day fully, gratefully, and with a warm spirit that touched everyone who knew him.
He will be remembered for his kindness, his humor, his stories, and the steadfast love he carried for his family and friends.
