James J. Vilkas

James J. Vilkas, of Ronkonkoma,NY passed away on August 27, 2026, surrounded by his daughters, the center of his world.

Born on May 23, 1960, in Holbrook, New York, to Helen Shunk (Kunisk) and Walter J. Vilkas, Jim lived a life defined by strength, generosity, laughter, and an unwavering love for family. Alongside his brothers, Wally Vilkas and Michael Vilkas, he built a lifetime of memories that will be treasured by all who knew and loved him.

Jim’s greatest pride and deepest joy were his five daughters: Brittany, Ashley, Kaila, Taylor, and Shaye. Nothing made him happier than having all of his girls together. The love he poured into them became the foundation of a family that continues to grow through his five beloved grandchildren, each of whom brought immeasurable happiness to his life.

He was the kind of man who gave without hesitation and loved without conditions. He showed up when people needed him, often before they even knew to ask. With a sharp wit, a sarcastic sense of humor, and a heart bigger than he would ever admit, he could fill a room with laughter and make a stranger feel like an old friend. Known as “Pabst” to his grandchildren and “NY Jim” to many others, he had a gift for bringing people together and making everyone feel they belonged.

Whether gathered around a backyard BBQ, celebrating a holiday, watching fireworks light up the night sky, or sharing a simple meal, Jim believed life’s greatest blessings were found in time spent together. He treasured family traditions and friendships, serving as the thread that kept so many people connected.

The mountains were one of his favorite places to be. He found peace in the Poconos and at Lake George, where days were spent fishing, camping, and soaking in the beauty of the outdoors. Around campfires, beside quiet water, and beneath open skies, he felt most at home. NASCAR, football, and a good laugh were among life’s simple pleasures he never outgrew.

Jim worked hard, took pride in doing things the right way, and believed that knowledge should be shared. He could fix just about anything, especially a car, and gladly passed those lessons on to family and friends. Through patient guidance, and everyday examples, he taught independence, responsibility, and resilience.

His generosity lived not only in grand gestures but in the traditions his family will forever cherish: Mountain trips to Sullivan County, 4th of July celebrations, and countless acts of kindness given freely and from the heart. Through every season of life, his loyal dog, Augie (Stevie), stood faithfully by his side. She was far more than a companion; she was his constant shadow, his best friend, and truly his everything. Whether riding alongside him on long car rides, accompanying him to auctions, or spending peaceful days together at Pinchot Park, Augie was rarely far from his side. Their bond was unwavering, and her presence brought him comfort, joy, and companionship throughout life’s journey.

Even as illness challenged him, Jim faced each day with determination and courage. Though his body grew tired, his love never did. He leaves behind more than memories. He leaves behind laughter, strength, patience, resilience, and the simple but powerful reminder to keep “sticking together,” a phrase his daughters heard often and one that will echo through generations.

His presence will be felt in every family gathering, every shared story, every mountain sunrise, every cast into still water, and every moment of laughter around a crowded table.

He will be deeply missed, forever cherished, and lovingly remembered.
