Joseph Harold Haugstatter Sr.

d. January 15, 2026

Joseph Haugstatter, 64, of Holtsville, New York, passed away on January 15, 2026.

Joe was a beloved father, husband, brother, uncle, friend, and coach. A force of personality, he was boisterous in the best way: loud laughter, big stories, animated gestures, and a presence that filled every room he entered. If Joe was there, you knew it, and you were probably laughing.

He spent his final day riding his Harley-Davidson around Florida and spending quality time with his best friend and chosen brother, Steve.

Joe found joy in the simple pleasures that made life feel full: motorcycles and cars, music, Yankees baseball, bike riding, and walking the beach during many memorable trips to Hutchinson Island, Florida. He loved downtown Port Jefferson and jet skiing or kayaking in Stony Brook harbor, places that reflected his appreciation for being near the water. He loved decorating and celebrating traditions of the holidays, especially Christmas, and he always made room for dessert, famously insisting that ice cream “slides down.”

Joe was deeply involved in his children’s lives and spent many years coaching all three of their teams. He showed up season after season, not just to teach the game, but to encourage, support, and build confidence in the kids he coached. His impact extended well beyond the field and remained long after the final pitch.

Above all, Joe treasured time with friends and family, especially his children, whom he spoke about with pride to anyone who would listen. Some of the most cherished moments were the everyday ones, like family breakfasts, hanging out together in the backyard, and countless games of Uno played together. A devoted and hands-on father, Joseph was never afraid to embarrass his children with his enthusiastic dancing or playful antics. He brought fun wherever he went and reminded those around him not to take life too seriously. He was a good listener who offered thoughtful advice, was always ready to help and endeavored to enjoy the moment he was in.

He proudly served on the fire patrol in his early career, and then went on to work for more than 30 years as a Public Safety Dispatcher for the Suffolk County Police Department. In this role, he was a calm and compassionate presence for countless people in moments of crisis, helping others navigate emergencies and offering reassurance when it was needed most. Throughout his life he also worked various second jobs in security, always committed to providing for his family.

Joseph is survived by his loving wife, Eleanor; his three children, Joey (partner Kaity, and her daughter Angelia), Ashley (partner Michael, and grand-dog Buddy “Budster”), and Heather; his sister, Karen; and his niece, Barbara (husband Vic, and children Sarah and Victor).

He was predeceased by his parents, Anna May and John.

Joe will be remembered for his booming laugh, his endless stories, his larger-than-life presence, and the deep love he had for his family and friends. Life is quieter without him, but infinitely richer because he was here.

In his honor, live your life to the fullest, enjoy the little things, and tell your people that you love them. He’ll be riding with the angels now.
