Joseph Wakie, a beloved father, uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 8, 2026, at the age of 97. Born at home in Maspeth, Queens, on December 8, 1928, Joseph lived a life marked by dedication, service, and love.

Joseph was the cherished son of Lottie and Joseph Wakie and he was one of five brothers. He was a devoted husband to his late wife, Raffaella, and a loving father to his surviving children, Kathy Bradley, Barbara Wakie Warren, and Joseph A. Wakie. His son, Kenny Horsford and daughter in law Diane, whom he missed dearly predeceased him. Joseph was blessed with two grandchildren, Nicole and Christopher and four great-grandchildren, Gianna, Mia, Natalie,and Summer Isabella, who brought immense joy to his life.

A proud veteran, Joseph served his country with honor in the US Army overseas in Italy during World War II. It was there, while serving as an army prison guard, that he developed an appreciation for opera's rich culture. Joseph's dedication to his duties was recognized with the World War II Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal, both universal service medals. His role as an M-1 Rifleman was a testament to his courage and resilience..

After his military service, Joseph continued to serve his community as a dedicated NYC sanitation worker. Known for his unique eye, he often brought home discarded treasures, which were cherished by his family. His work ethic and commitment to his job left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

Joseph was also a proud member of the Knights of Columbus, where he formed lifelong friendships and contributed to community service projects..

Joseph leaves behind a legacy of love and resilience, carried on by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He had a tough exterior but was a teddy bear once you got to know him. He was always fair and gained your respect with his wisdom, common sense and open arms. His memory will live in the hearts of all who knew him.

Visitation will be Tuesday July 14, 2026 2 - 4 pm and 7 - 9 pm at Moloney Family Funeral Home. Mass will be July 15, 2026, at 9:30 AM at St. John the Evangelist RC Church. Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance of a life well lived..

Joseph Wakie will be remembered as a man of strength, kindness, and unwavering devotion to his family and country. He will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
