Margaret Mary Katherine Sheprow

d. May 28, 2026

November 12, 1930 – May 28, 2026

Margaret Mary Katherine "Peggy" Sheprow (née Kerr), a devoted wife, mother of seven, volunteer, golfer, and cherished member of the Port Jefferson community, passed away peacefully on May 28, 2026, at Stony Brook University Hospital. She was 95.

Peggy was born November 12, 1930, in Newark, New Jersey to Edward Joseph Kerr and Susan McElwaine, who emigrated from Ireland to the United States through Ellis Island just before Peggy, the first of their four children, was born. Peggy grew up in North Arlington, New Jersey and graduated from Our Lady Queen of Peace High School in 1948. She went on to work for RCA, where she met the love of her life, Harold Joseph Sheprow, at a company softball game. They married on February 9, 1957.

They began their lives together in Leonardo, New Jersey and by the time the family moved to Port Jefferson in 1961, Peggy and Hal had three children and another on the way. Peggy went on to give birth to a total of seven children, all of whom graduated from Port Jefferson High School, where Peggy worked for a time as a teacher’s aide in the remedial reading program.

A devoted volunteer at Mather Hospital for nearly 20 years, she went on to amass more than 5,000 volunteer hours working on Wednesdays delivering the mail to every department in the hospital with a smile and pleasant word for all she encountered. The role also allowed her to visit patients, offering comfort to friends and neighbors during difficult times. She was a fixture as a model at the annual Mather Hospital Volunteer Fashion Show, with a sense of style that helped showcase the clothing available at the Mather Thrift Shop; everyone looked forward to her selections which she wore with elegance and confidence.

Peggy met and made many friends in the activities she took up while she raised her seven children, and developed lasting friendships with many whom she met in the process. She loved to bowl, play bridge and do puzzles, but golf became her most beloved pastime. It was something she shared with Hal while they traveled, and she frequently played at Port Jefferson Country Club, where she and Hal later received honorary lifetime memberships in recognition of their contributions to the acquisition of the Club for the Village in 1978. As a member, she was active in the Harbor Hills Tuesday Tournament Group and spent time volunteering at different events and activities there. In 2001, she and her team qualified for and represented Port Jefferson Country Club at the Women’s Oldsmobile Scramble in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. In 2006, she recorded her first hole-in-one at the Island Dunes Country Club in Jensen Beach, Florida.

An avid gardener with a remarkable green thumb, Peggy seemed able to bring any plant back to life. She was an excellent seamstress, making a lot of the clothing her daughters wore.

When Hal retired from Grumman in 1991 and they became empty nesters with their last child having graduated from high school in 1990, they began a new chapter in their lives, traveling all over the country in an RV, visiting friends and family and playing golf at hundreds of courses. They ultimately spent their winters at the Larry & Penny Thompson Park and Campground in Miami where they made another set of beautiful friendships. Peggy was renowned for her annual St. Patrick’s Day celebration, serving her classic corned beef and cabbage and homemade Irish soda bread to dozens of campground friends.

A devout Catholic, Peggy raised her children under the Catholic faith and ensured they were all educated and confirmed through the Infant Jesus religious education program. She also volunteered as a catechism instructor at Infant Jesus, with many students recalling her exceptional ability to teach the faith.

Together, Peggy and Hal built a lasting family legacy in Port Jefferson. While Hal served the community in numerous leadership roles, Peggy provided unwavering support at home, nurturing their family and helping create the foundation upon which that legacy was built. She was a devoted grandmother and had special relationships with all her grandchildren and their children as well.

Her family was her greatest pride and joy, and her legacy lives on through the generations she nurtured, loved, and inspired. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her.

Peggy is survived by her brother James Robert Kerr, her children Madelyn, Dennis (Alicia), Lauren, Brendan (Wendy), Warren (Allyse), and Glenn (Donna), 15 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Harold, her parents, Eddie and Susan, her sister Josephine, her brother Edward, and son Neil Harold.
