Today we celebrate the 91 years that Marie A. Leo (Tipping-McGreevy) graced our presence. Marie is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Robert A. Leo as well as her children Linda McGreevy, Ann McGreevy-Doria (Frank Doria) and Margaret Piedmonte (Frank Granati). Marie is also survived by her grandson, Francis Coleman.
Marie A. Leo grew up in Ozone Park and never tired of telling stories about all the fun she had in Rockaway, Howard Beach, and Broad Channel. Her first job was on Wall Street in the 50s where she had lunch at Chock Full O’ Nuts coffee shop every day. Once becoming a wife and mother, she moved out to suburbia, Port Jefferson Station on Long Island where she opened her own catering business. As a single parent, she settled in the stability of a bank teller position at Manufacturers Hanover Bank (Chemical Bank). There she completed her Associated Degree while managing bank branches, sometimes as district manager. She was a mentor and gave recognition to many talented employees that worked for her. She rose in the ranks to become one of the first female Assistant Vice Presidents. When she retired in 1999, she was such a valuable asset, they hired her back to help with the acquisition of Chemical Bank to Chase Manhattan Bank. She continued to work well into her late 70s, at Harleysville Bank and at Rite Aid. She also volunteered for Meals on Wheels and Birthright.
Marie loved bowling, gardening, playing cards and reading. She loved to entertain. Many can recall the 5-course dinners that she and Bob hosted. She loved to travel and adored living on the beach in Florida in her later years. There she lived close to her younger brother, Jack Tipping, with whom she was close. Marie was very spiritual, loving and kind. Her hugs made your heart feel bigger. Those who knew and loved her know we are better, stronger, and happier for having had her in our lives.
