With heavy hearts we announce that Michael J Donohoe

Passed away on September 10th, 2024, at The Long Island State Veterans Home after a long illness. 

Michael Donohoe was born in New York City, NY, May 13, 1935, to Maryann Berry Donohoe and Gerald Donohoe. He grew a up in Jackson Heights, Queens, New York. Served in the NY National Guard and the US Air Force and was stationed at Pepperrell Air Force Base, St John’s Newfoundland where he met his wife Iris Kelly, who was a civilian employee of the US Air Force. They married in 1960 and are proud parents of four children, Edward, Alan, Chris and Michelle who grew up in Patchogue, Long Island, NY. They attended Patchogue Medford High School and their father was a member of the fathers club and Iris, their mom worked with the school district.

Mike was an avid baseball and hockey fan, grew up in New York City attending the Giants baseball and Rangers hockey games with his best sports fan, his mother, Maryann. Always a hockey fan, he became a hockey referee and worked doing high school and college games in the Long Island, NY area. 

After the four graduated High School. Mike and Iris moved to Portland, Maine, where Mike worked for AAA as a Driver Safety Instructor and continued to Instruct in the hockey referee programs. Mike and Iris retired in 2002 to the shore of Delaware where they enjoyed living in a resort area near Rehoboth Beach.

Mike was always involved with the church, as a religious instructor, Lector, Eucharist minister and devoted many hours to the Knights of Columbus in several elected positions at Holy Cross, South Portland, Maine, St. Sylvester’s, Medford, NY and St Michael the Archangel, Millsboro, Delaware.

Predeceased by his parents Maryann and Gerald Donohoe, mother in law Aileen Kelly, sister in law Rose McCabe, brothers in law Edward Kelly (Sandra) Michael Kelly (Marie), Bill Kennedy (Nellie) and William Dwyer (Trish)

Loved, cherished, and will be forever missed by his wife Iris, children, Edward (Tammie), Alan (Susan), Chris (Susan), Michelle Yaeger (Robert). Grandchildren, Kristen (Kevin Kane), Patrick Donohoe (Melissa), Brian Donohoe (Lauren), Caitlin Donohoe (Travis Carruthers), Aileen Yaeger (John Hambrook), Mark Yaeger (Olivia), Harrison Yaeger (Mykaela). Great grandchildren, Greyson Kane, Leo, Orion and Apollo Donohoe. Godson, Lawrence Berry. Sisters in law, Nellie Kennedy, Patricia Dwyer, Peggy Kelly, Brothers in law, Jim Kelly (Brenda), John Kelly, Owen Kelly (Vivian), Joe Kelly and numerous nieces and nephews.

After Mike’s health declined, they moved back to Long Island and resided in Manorville. Mike entered the Long Island State Veterans Home in Stony Brook in July 2023, where he was treated with loving compassionate care for which the family is forever grateful.

His loving and giving spirit will be missed by all.

In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate a donation to the Long Island State Veterans Home.
