Paula Diane Filipowich was the heart of her family and cherished friend to so many. She passed away peacefully on January 14, 2026. Born on May 11, 1948, in Brooklyn, New York, Paula lived a life defined by love, devotion, and an unwavering commitment to those she cared for.
First and foremost, Paula was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She is survived by her beloved daughter, Susan Filipowich, son-in-law, Christopher Lipani, husband of her late daughter, Melissa Filipowich Lipani; Paula took immense pride and joy in her cherished granddaughter, Grace Lipani. Paula is also survived by her brother, Victor Sassone and wife Mary Ann; and sister Mary Ellen Aliperti. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Douglas Filipowich, with whom she shared a lifetime of love, partnership, and family.
Paula dedicated her professional life to caring for children as the Director of the United Methodist Nursery School in Lake Grove. To countless families, she was more than an educator — she was a steady, nurturing presence who shaped young lives with patience, kindness, and genuine joy.
Creativity and connection filled Paula’s days. She found peace and immense joy in quilting and needlepoint, pouring her care into every stitch. Some of her happiest memories were made traveling with her family and friends. Whether at local campgrounds with the Long Island Drifters, traveling cross country with her husband and children or during treasured summers at Camperama in southern Vermont, times filled with laughter, fun, friendship, and togetherness. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life, and she was an active, caring member of the United Methodist Church in Lake Grove. Never far from her side was her dearly loved dog, Daisy Mae, who along with her granddog Francesca, brought her comfort, companionship and lots of joy.
Paula will be remembered for her warmth, her gentle strength, and the way she made people feel seen and loved. Family was always her greatest priority, and the love she gave so freely will continue to live on in all who knew her.
As we honor Paula’s life, we invite those who loved her to gather in remembrance — to share stories, reflect on moments, and celebrate the beautiful impact she had on our lives.
