OBITUARY OF PHILIP D. CAMERA
Early Life and Education
Philip D. Camera was born in Ozone Park, New York, and spent his formative years in Springfield Gardens, NY. At the time, Springfield Gardens was a rural community, providing Phil with ample opportunity to develop his notable baseball skills. Alongside his athletic pursuits, he served as an usher at Christ the King Roman Catholic Church and held several part-time jobs. Phil graduated from Andrew Jackson High School, marking the completion of his early education.
Career in Law Enforcement
At the age of 21, Phil began his distinguished career by joining the New York City Police Department. As a patrolman, he witnessed firsthand the devastating effects of drugs on the youth in his community. Motivated by a desire to make a greater impact, he transitioned to the Queens Narcotics Division. His dedication led him further to the Organized Crime Control Bureau and later to the Federal Drug Enforcement Task Force, where he continued his efforts to combat drug-related crime.
Family Life
On August 31, 1957, Phil married his beloved Patricia at Christ the King Church. Together, they embarked on their journey as a family. Their first son, Philip Jr., was soon followed by William and Matthew, bringing even more love and joy into their household. Phil was grateful to God for these blessings.
As time passed, Phil’s family grew when Philip Jr. married Andrea, William married Elizabeth Ann and Matthew married Valarie, continuing the legacy of love and togetherness. His grandchildren, Emilie, Michael, Elizabeth and Eva were his greatest source of pride and joy.
Passion for Sports and Community
Phil maintained his enthusiasm for baseball, playing actively well into his seventy-ninth year. He also coached both baseball and football at the YMCA in Smithtown. One of his proudest achievements was sharing a season with all three of his sons on the same team. Phil was a fourth-degree member of the Knights of Columbus and an honorary member of the USMC Detachment, a recognition he received through a dear friend and fellow police officer. These activities reflected his commitment to community and camaraderie.
