U.S. Air Force Veteran, NYPD Sergeant, U.S. Customs Inspector, Beloved Husband, Father, and Grandfather, Uncle and Friend
Richard Bounaparte, 82, of Hauppauge, N.Y., passed away peacefully on August 21, 2025.
A proud American and dedicated public servant, Richard enlisted in the U.S. Air Force at just 17 years old. He bravely served his country in the Vietnam War, and was stationed at Iwo Jima, exemplifying courage and commitment throughout his military career.
Following his service, Richard joined the New York Police Department in 1967, where he continued to serve his community with honor and integrity. He was promoted to the rank of sergeant in 1981, earning the respect and admiration of his fellow officers. He served the city with honor and dedication until his retirement in 1990.
Never one to sit still, Richard continued his commitment to public service by working as a U.S. Customs Inspector at J.F.K. Airport for another 10 years. Throughout that time, he was effective in over 480 seizures demonstrating a significant effort and dedication to the Customs mission.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Richard was a lifelong Lionel train enthusiast and found peace in fishing. He will be remembered for his steady presence, generous heart, and unwavering devotion to his family.
He is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 58 years, Joanne; his three children, Jeannine, Matt and Maryanne; and two cherished grandchildren, Dylan and Nicolette.
Richard’s legacy of service, strength, and love will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
The family would prefer a donation in memory of Richard in lieu of flowers.
