Richard John Cummo

The family of Richard John Cummo of Port Charlotte FL and Long Island NY is saddened to announce his passing on June 8, 2025 following a battle of Pulmonary Fibrosis. Born April 5, 1945 in Bronx NY, of parents Peter H Cummo and Viola E Cummo (Schappert), along with 2 brothers and a sister. Richard is survived by his dedicated and loyal wife, Janice L. Cummo (Arnold) of 54 years. After getting married in 1971, they went on to have 6 children. Richard J. Cummo JR, Paul J. Cummo (Erin Cummo), Ronald J. Cummo (RoseAnn Cummo), Kevin R. Cummo (Michelle Cummo), Billy J. Cummo (Christina Cummo), and Debora L. Cummo. He then became the proud grandfather of 12 grandchildren. Alyssa Cummo, Ryan Cummo, Nicolas Cummo, Paige Cummo, Kyle Cummo, Brooke Cummo, Hailey Whitlock-Cummo, Parker Cummo, Lillian Whitlock-Cummo, Gavin Cummo, Quinn Cummo and Brady Cummo. Also, many nieces, nephews, and friends who called him Uncle Richie. In 1968 he was drafted into the United States Army to serve in the Vietnam War. While being exposed to toxic chemicals, including Agent Orange, he was still proud to serve until 1970. He then went to work in maintenance in Riverhead NY, for the Suffolk County Department of Public Works until he retired in 1998. He also served in the Army Reserves from about 1975-1985 and was part of the VFW. Not only was he the family’s provider, he would also do anything to defend his family. When he retired, he and Janice moved to their second home in Port Charlotte, Florida. He enjoyed the snowbird lifestyle but always kept his Long Island roots. From traveling, fishing, gardening, Call of Duty, coin collecting, tinkering around, and finding the best deals, overall, he was a proud veteran, husband, and family man. Graveside service with military honors will be held at Restlawn Memorial Gardens 1380 Forrest Nelson Blvd, Port Charlotte FL 33952, Saturday June 14, 2025 at 11:00am.
