Rory E. Cooley, a lifelong resident of Huntington, NY, peacefully passed away on August 25, 2026, at the age of 71, after a two-year battle with prostate and neuroendocrine cancer. He was a loving father, grandfather, son, brother, and friend who will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him.
Rory was born and raised in Huntington and had a lifelong interest in computers, science, and technology. He graduated magna cum laude from New York Institute of Technology and went on to have a career in technology, working as both a software engineer and software salesman. Programming was more than a career for Rory; it was something he genuinely enjoyed and remained interested in throughout his life.
Rory had many interests and was always curious about the world around him. He loved reading, watching movies, visiting museums, sailing, astronomy, and spending time looking at the stars. He had a particular love for science-fiction, especially Star Trek, as well as films such as Forbidden Planet and THX 1138. Whether he was working with a computer, watching a favorite movie, learning something new at a museum, or looking up at the night sky, Rory enjoyed anything that gave him an opportunity to learn, think, and explore.
More than anything, Rory loved his family. He was the proud father of his four children, Anthony, Daniel, Christa, and Erin, and grandfather to his six grandchildren, Leia, Courtney, Violet, Hunter, Ryder, and Benjamin. Spending time with his children and grandchildren was one of the greatest joys of his life, and he was always proud of them.
Rory is also survived by his mother, Marilyn, his brother, Thomas, as well as his extended family and friends.
Those who knew Rory will remember his funny sense of humor, his curiosity, and his positive outlook on life. He was an optimistic and generous person who cared deeply about his family and friends. The things he loved. Science, technology, the stars, sailing, movies, and learning, reflected the way he looked at life. There was always something more to see, something more to understand, and something new worth discovering.
Above all, Rory will be remembered for the love he had for his family and the many memories he made with them. His sense of humor, curiosity, and enthusiasm for the things he loved will live on through his children, grandchildren, family, and friends.
