Sonia Margaret Montero

June 24, 1942 - June 30, 2026. Born in Juncos, Puerto Rico to her parents, Francisco Garcia, Las Piedras, PR (deceased 1990) and Lydia Melendez-Garcia, Humacao, PR (deceased 2015)

Sonia grew up on Pacific Street in Brooklyn, NY and was the oldest of 10 children, predeceased by Nelson, Connie, Elvin, Joe, Robert, Evelyn and survived by brothers Jimmy, Frankie and Eddie. Sonia graduated from John Jay High School in Brooklyn in 1960 and worked for Loeb, Rhoades & Co. from 1960-1963. In 1963 she married Robert J. Montero becoming wife and homemaker. Sonia is survived by her 3 children, Andrew, Deborah and Jeffrey, 4 grandchildren, Stacie, Stephen, Christian and Justin and 3 great grandchildren, Paisley, Roman and Avaya.

Sonia began attending Upper Room Christian World Center in 1991 and served in Spanish Ministry beginning in '93 as translator and interpreter for Church Services and Cantatas, also becoming a member of choir of this same ministry. Sonia's remarkable joy and happiness as well as her laughter were a great anchor for visitors of the church and all who knew her in the Spanish ministry. Sonia also ministered and evangelized to people giving them hope and help. She also helped at Mercy house through evangelism and prayer which were among her favorite activities. Sonia had great compassion for people in need especially in the Hispanic community.

From 2002-2008 Sonia worked and served faithfully at Freeport Bible Center and its Academy and Day Care. She was often the first welcoming smile families saw at the Academy and Day Care and she loved the kids. Sonia assisted Apostle Carlos Luis Vargas the Executive Director and Founder and behind the scenes kept things running with order and diligence and love. Sonia worked directly under Pastor Otto Palencia. Everything she did she always did unto the Lord, and she always worked in excellence. Colossians 3:23 was evident in her life.

Sonia worked for and retired from Suffolk County Early Intervention, 2008-2018. She loved seeing and working with the families. Besides her office work, her translation skills were always available and were instrumental in giving proper care. Nina, Director of Amityville Health Center, worked tirelessly to place Sonia and keep her working after the Clinic closed putting Sonia in a position to retire from Suffolk County’s department of health making financial easement for her in her retirement years.

Sonia leaves behind a great legacy and will be deeply missed by the Church, family, friends and all who knew her.
