Yolande Stewart Gray
September 2, 1954 – September 1, 2026
Yolande Stewart Gray, affectionately known as “Yo-Yo” to her friends and “Meemaw” to her grandchildren, passed away peacefully on September 1, 2026, surrounded by love and just one day shy of her 72nd birthday.
Yolande was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend whose greatest joy was the people she loved. She had a warmth and presence that made everyone feel at home, and anyone who knew her will remember her for many things, but perhaps most of all, they will remember her laugh. Her unmistakable laugh could fill a room, bring a smile to someone’s face, and make even an ordinary moment feel special. It was uniquely hers and will forever be a part of the memories she leaves behind.
Yolande built a career in the insurance industry, where she dedicated many years of her professional life before retiring. Retirement, however, did not slow her down. True to her energetic spirit and desire to stay busy, she went on to work with American Airlines, an experience that complemented one of her greatest passions- traveling.
Yolande loved to travel, shop, and, most of all, spend time with her family and friends. She especially enjoyed cruising with her sisters, sharing new adventures, creating cherished memories, and simply enjoying the time they had together. She loved experiencing new places and being surrounded by the people who brought her joy. Her love for her family and friends was evident in the countless ways she showed up for them, and her presence will be deeply missed.
As a mother, Yolande loved her daughters deeply. As a grandmother, she found a special kind of joy in being “Meemaw” to Marques, Maddie, and MJ. Her grandchildren held a special place in her heart, and the memories they created together will remain with them forever.
Yolande leaves to cherish her legacy, her husband, Michael Gray; her daughters, Deidre (Stephen) and Chelsea; and her treasured grandchildren, Marques, Maddie, and MJ.
She is also survived by her sisters, Charlene Nixon (Robert), Michele Antoinnette Stewart and Elfreda Johnson; niece, Andrea Adams; nephew, Craig Adams (Tina); grandnephew, Trentin Burchett; grandnieces, Tasani Williams and Jelyse Adams; her beloved cousins of the Mitchell and Richmond families; sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Haynes and Jenny Lopez; brothers-in-law, Martin and Gene Gray and a host of cherished family members and dear friends who will forever hold her close in their hearts.
Yolande’s family would also like to give special recognition to her lifelong best friend, Renee, whose friendship spanned from childhood and who remained faithfully by Yolande’s side throughout her final journey. Her steadfast love, presence, and friendship were a beautiful testament to the bond they shared. The family also extends heartfelt gratitude to Don and Sonya Jones for their friendship, love, and constant support during this difficult time.
Yolande was preceded in death by her stepson, Michael Gray Jr., and her parents, Veronica Mitchell Stewart and Albert Stewart.
Although Yolande’s life on earth has come to an end, the love she gave and the joy she brought to those around her will live on through everyone who knew and loved her. Her family finds comfort in knowing that she is now free from pain and at peace.
She was deeply loved, she will be deeply missed, and she will never be forgotten. Her laughter, her love, and the joy she brought to others will remain in our hearts forever.
