James Nolan, 101, beloved father, grandfather and great- grandfather, passed away surround by his family on December 9, 2019 at St. Catherine’s of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown, New York.
James was born on October 29, 1918 to James J. Nolan and Mary (Codiroli) Nolan in Manhattan, New York. He attended both parochial and public schools in Manhattan and Queens, New York.
From 1941 to 1945 James was a soldier in the United States Army as an infantryman in the 4th Armored Division of General George S. Patton’s Famous Third Army during the European campaign of World War II. He was stationed all throughout Europe and saw conflict in both the Normandy Invasion and Battle of the Bulge.
During his time in the United States Army, he married his sweetheart, Margaret H. Bonnie, on July 30, 1943 at St. Luke’s Roman Catholic Church in Whitestone, New York. Together they had two children, son James P. Nolan and daughter Jean E. Nolan Schwabedissen, whom they raised in Smithtown.
After World War II, James worked for several years at the famous Steinway Piano Company in Astoria, Queens before moving to Smithtown. Following his employment at Steinway, James worked for the State of New York as a painter and glazier in the State Hospitals on Long Island, which he retired from in 1982.
James’ hobbies included drawing and painting, a lifelong love of gardening which he learned from his beloved grandparents, sailing and entertaining everyone with his infamous stories of growing up during the depression, World War II and life with his family.
James was predeceased by his parents, James J. and Mary, his sister, Catherine, his brother John, and his sweetheart, Margaret H. Nolan. James and Margaret were married for 56 years before she passed on April 30, 1999. He is survived by his children: James P. Nolan of Colorado and daughter Jean E. Nolan Schwabedissen of Poughkeepsie, NY; his youngest brother Harold Nolan of NY; grandchildren: Richard K. Schwabedissen of Carmel NY; Kathleen and husband Thomas J. Burke Jr. of Poughkeepsie, NY; Karen E. Dalrymple of Berwick, PA; Nancy A. Schwabedissen of Poughkeepsie, NY; Scott P. Schwabedissen of Poughkeepsie, NY; great-grandchildren: Christopher M. Haines of Poughkeepsie, NY; Lauryn E. Dalrymple, Kate N. Dalrymple, Matthew B. Dalrymple and Kristen A. Dalrymple of Berwick, PA and Ella R. MacIsaac of Poughkeepsie, NY. He is also survived by cousin Thomas Nolan of Brentwood, NY and several nieces and nephews.
We as a family are proud of his bravery, courage and for his service to his country, and James took humble honor to have served his country.
