Joe Messina lived a beautiful life of 89 years. He genuinely cared for everyone he met. He had the incredible ability to have every person feel special in his presence, and he always remembered your name!
Joe was born and raised in Greenwich Village. He grew up in an Italian neighborhood where church, family and sports filled his life. In his 20’s he married Sylvia Pagnotta, and soon after, joined the FDNY. He had a full career of 31 years serving as one of NYC‘s Bravest. He retired as a lieutenant in 1989.
Joe and Sylvia raised 4 children and moved the family to Long Island in 1967. His love of sports continued as he became a HS baseball and basketball official for 39 years and an avid runner – completing 3 half marathons.
In his retirement years, Joe was very active in church ministry at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish serving as an Eucharistic Minister and attending daily Mass with a community of wonderful friends. He also enjoyed his time on the golf course with his buddies and cherished the time spent with his 8 grandchildren.
Joe taught us the value of staying connected with friends and family. To Joe, each day was a celebration!
